Artificial Intelligence (AI) Reconstructed Baroque Opera “Andromeda” (Latvia)
The world’s first AI-reconstructed baroque opera ANDROMEDA (Latvia)
August 21, 2024, at 7:00 PM in the Narva Kreenholm manufactory opera stage
The world’s first opera created using AI tools, “Andromeda,” marks a significant milestone in the integration of technology and art. The original 17th-century opera “Andromeda,” composed by Marco Scacchi, was considered lost, as only the libretto by Virgilio Puccitelli has survived. However, an international team of developers, using an AI model created by Martin Malandro, has revived the music, enabling a contemporary performance that blends early baroque styles with 21st-century technological innovations.
Historical Background
“Andromeda” was one of three operas performed in the 17th century at the Vilnius Lower Castle by Grand Duke of Lithuania and King of Poland Władysław IV Vasa. The other operas were “The Abduction of Helen” and “Deceived Circe,” all with librettos by Virgilio Puccitelli. The original music, likely composed by Marco Scacchi, has been lost over time.
Modern Revival
AI was used to reconstruct the lost music for “Andromeda.” The AI model, developed by Martin Malandro, analyzed surviving works by Marco Scacchi and his contemporaries to create a new score. Lithuanian composer Mantautas Krukauskas and Latvian composer and conductor Māris Kupčs led the project, ensuring that the recreated music reflected the essence of early baroque while incorporating contemporary decision-making processes.
